The Leadership System: Becoming the Leader Your Business Needs

The business either works for you…Or you work for it. And the difference… Is leadership.

June 21, 2026

“What will you do with your one wild and precious life?” — Mary Oliver

This episode is about more than business.

It’s about leadership as a system—and the ongoing work of becoming the person your business requires you to be.

In this episode of the Plantscape Business School Podcast, Brad Miller explores System #7: The Leadership System—the most overlooked, yet most important system in your business.

The Big Idea

Working on your business…
is really about working on yourself.

Leadership is not a destination.

It’s a journey.
A passage from amateur to professional.
The ongoing work of becoming.

The Leadership Truth

Your business will not grow beyond you.

This is what John Maxwell calls The Law of the Lid.

  • When your business is small, your current leadership is enough
  • As it grows in size and complexity… you must grow with it

If you don’t:

You become the bottleneck.
You become the lid.

The Shift: From Technician to Leader

At some point, you must:

  • Take off the tool belt (physically and mentally)
  • Stop being the technician
  • Even move beyond being the manager

And fully step into the role of leader and visionary.

Your work becomes:

  • Thinking work
  • Vision work
  • Leadership work

5 Guidelines for Building a Leadership System

These aren’t rules—they’re starting points to help you think like a leader.

1. Weekly Leadership Time is Scheduled

  • Meetings are celebrated, not dreaded
  • They are timely (start and end on time)
  • They are useful (clear agenda and outcomes)

Great execution starts with a consistent meeting cadence.

2. KPIs Are Reviewed Consistently

  • Know your numbers.
  • Review your dashboards.
  • Identify and solve issues.

Data drives clarity.
Clarity drives action.

3. Systems Are Documented and Improved

Your vision becomes reality through systems.

Ask yourself:

  • Are your systems written down?
  • Are they used?
  • Are they improving?

If systems live only in your head:

You are the system
And you are the bottleneck

4. Quarterly Planning Happens

Focus on:

The Big Rocks (1–2 priorities, not 12).

  • These drive your weekly actions.
  • These create alignment and progress.

5. The Business Can Operate Without You

At first, this feels impossible.

But it starts with a belief:

You are not an employee.
You are a business owner.

The goal:

A business that works for you.
And ultimately… without you.

The Deeper Work

Leadership is about:

  • Finding your voice
  • Living in your Zone of Genius
  • Stepping into your unique ability

This is the work of becoming the leader you were created to be.

Closing Thought

Leadership as a system gets to the essence of who you are…
and what you want to do with your life.

Because in the end:

The business either works for you…
Or you work for it.

And the difference…
Is leadership.
