When you create better customers, you build a better business.

Episode Overview
In this episode of the Plantscape Business School Podcast, Brad Miller continues the conversation on Targeted Direct Response Marketing.
The focus of this episode is simple:
Who exactly are you targeting?
Target marketing begins with identifying your ideal prospect. Not just any prospect. The right prospect. The precise prospect. The bull's-eye.
Because prospects turn into customers.
And in the Plantscape business, customers often become long-term relationships.
The Big Idea
Your business becomes what you target.
If you target the wrong prospects, you create the wrong customers.
If you target the right prospects, you can create a business that is more profitable, predictable, enjoyable, and stable.
That is the power of targeted marketing.
Start with Your Current Customers
The best place to identify your ideal prospect is by looking at your current customers.
Ask:
- Who are my best customers right now?
- Not just good customers.
- The best of the best.
Those customers are giving you a blueprint for the kind of prospects you should be pursuing.
What Makes a Great Plantscape Customer?
1. They Are Good People
They are nice.
You enjoy working with them.
They respect you.
They value you as a trusted partner.
That matters more than most people think.
2. They Are Profitable
They have strong monthly recurring revenue. They have strong margins.
That does not happen by accident.
It comes from good business decisions, including premium pricing and saying no to bad opportunities.
3. You Are Not in a Bidding Situation
You did not win the account because you were the lowest price.
You were not chasing an RFP.
You positioned your work differently. You pursued them directly.
That is the power of targeted direct response marketing.
4. The Work Is Sustainable
The design works.
The light is right.
The plant varieties are right.
That means:
- Fewer replacements
- Better margins
- Less frustration
A sustainable account is a profitable account.
5. They Are Long-Term Clients
These are not short-term wins.
They are decade-long relationships.
That is where the real value of a Plantscape business is built.
This is lifetime value.
6. They Are Financially Sound
They pay on time.
Sometimes early.
You are not worried about collections.
That is a big deal.
7. Their Industry Is Stable
They are in a business with a future.
They are stable, healthy, and growing.
That makes them a better long-term customer.
8. They Have Space for Growth
Their building has multiple places for plants.
PFPs: Places for Plants.
More plant locations create:
- More opportunities
- Higher monthly programs
- Better accounts
9. They Are Close to Other Accounts
Location matters.
Less windshield time means:
- Better route density
- Higher efficiency
- Better profitability
10. They Are Not Constantly Targeted by Competitors
You do not want every account to be a constant battle.
The best customers are stable, loyal, and value the relationship.
Why This Matters
You probably already have some customers like this.
The question is:
What would your business look like if you had 100 more?
It would be:
- More profitable
- More predictable
- More enjoyable
- More stable
That is the game-changer.
The Work of the Business Owner
Your job is to define the precise prospect profile for your Plantscape business.
You need to clearly know:
“This is who we want.”
And just as important:
“This is who we do not want.”
You need to know your business so you can say no in your business.
The Shift
Most businesses do this backwards.
They take whoever comes, then try to make it work.
That leads to:
- Low margins
- Difficult clients
- Operational stress
Targeted marketing does the opposite.
You choose the right prospect, then go directly to them.
Closing Thought
With targeted direct response marketing, you can be very picky.
You can target the right prospects.
You can create better customers.
And when you create better customers, you build a better business.
A business that works.
A business that runs smoothly.
A business that becomes predictable.
And eventually, a business that works without you.
